SARAH MORRIS - "BYE BYE BRAZIL" @ THE WHITE CUBE (BERMONDSEY)

(White Cube Gallery - Bermondsey)

(Sarah Morris: 'Rio Paintings')

Sarah Morris

Bye Bye Brazil

When I entered the room filled with paintings, you are confronted with colour and noise
The artist's general practice is filming cities as 'film portraits'.

Morris films as an unbiased viewer. She notices small hidden things and what inspired her practice was filming repetitive events in her everyday life.
The artist gets you to focus on little things, little beauties people overlook amongst the people and cities of Rio:
The rhythmic wave of flags.
The tension and rubbing of fingers of the workers in the office.
The colour amongst the masses of young bodies.
The strong structures of the buildings.
The contrast between the models posing in the mags with the old/middle aged citizens waiting in a posed position at a bustop.
The camera sweep at a beach in Brazil where the people in the foreground are clearer in focus and animated compared to the objects and people that are stationary in the background.
The colour of the scenery is appealing to the eye - greens, reds, yellows and pinks.
Each scenario tells the lives of the people and events hidden in Rio which go unnoticed. The artist doesn't want the  viewer to miss a thing.
The artist successfully captures the essence and beauty of Rio by filming EVERY aspect of the city, not leaving anything out. The artist puts the make-up of Rio all in one film.
