GHANA FASHION DESIGN WEEK (GFDW) OCT 2013

sq1.gif

"Ghana Fashion & Design Week® is a contemporary international platform envisioned to direct, lead and promote both emerging and established designers to a global audience...The organization is structured with an aim to develop and educate emerging talents in Ghana through its mentoring platforms and inspirational industry seminars giving them the opportunity to evolve and involve internationally. GFDW is strategically placed to support and strengthen the fashion, textiles and apparel manufacturing industries in Ghana.- GFDW 2013.

One of the biggest factors for the success of the Western world is their dominance in the creative industry, especially the fashion industry. One of the biggest things that Africa is deprived of as a nation is the lack of use of showing off their creative ability and skill which would enable them to target global audiences to trade their designer with. We've seen the famous artist Picasso take information from his observations of African mask carvings and use in his work, while openly denying that he had any influence from African art. Slowly we are seeing a wave of African inspired clothing found in shops such as H&M, River Island and even Primark and sadly, African designers did not have input into the designs we see in these shops today. This is why Ghana Fashion Design Week is such an important platform for African designers as well as for the African Economy, particularly Ghana, where economic growth is much needed. We thank God that GFDW has found favour from companies such as "Vogue Italia", "Blackberry" & "Moet&Chandon" to sponsor the event, even though this is only the SECOND YEAR the event has taken place! The whole world is watching and waiting for the manifestation of African creatives to show the world what Africa is made of!

If you're in Ghana from the 11th-13th Oct 2013, do show your support and see a catwalk show which showcases work from African designers. Check out the website for more info:

Here are a few of the talents from last year's show & the ones expected to showcase this year:

SAATCHI GALLERY AUGUST 2013

The August 2013 Saatchi Collection was a fresh of breathe air! I've seen paper used creatively before, but not as sophisticated as these pieces shown below. If like me, you're an art student in desperate need of cheap materials to create elaborate art, then paper is your best bet!
